WEDDING LICENCE APPLICATIONS

A marriage licence is valid for 3 months from the date it was issued. This licence must be brought to the wedding ceremony or the marriage will not be legal.

Information on wedding licence applications can be found at the Ontario government website: www.ontario.ca/government/get-married-ontario

Marriage licences are obtained through your local municipality.

Please check with the municipality’s website to ensure you have all of the information required to purchase a marriage licence.

As long as the application is signed by both parties, only one applicant (with both partners’ identification documents) is required to visit the municipal office to purchase the licence. It usually takes 30 minutes to process the application while you wait.

To get a marriage licence you will need to:

    • Bring the completed Marriage Licence application signed by both applicants. You can fill it out online and print it by visiting the government website: www.ontario.ca/government/get-married-ontario
    • Bring 2 pieces of government-issued identification for each person getting married. Examples:
      • government-issued birth certificate, including any change of name certificates
      • valid passport
      • record of immigrant landing
      • Canadian Citizenship Card
      • valid driver’s licence
      • valid Ontario Photo Card
    • If you are remarrying after a divorce, you will need official proof of the divorce. Examples:
    • Pay a fee. Fees vary by municipality, so shop around for the best price and be sure you know which forms of payment they take.
